Seeds for a Song Project Goals

We are hoping that the Seeds for a Song project will grow quickly and inspire others to follow their passion with other projects that contribute to a healthier, happier planet.

Here's what we plan to do with the funds from iTunes: Half the money will be spent locally buying high quality organic seed from small farmers to give away to you. I will give away seeds at my concerts, and we will develop an efficent method to distribute seed to start seed banks in your community. All we ask is that you plant the seeds and share your harvest the following year. My dream is to see seed banks everywhere! No one company should own food. Seed banks protect bio-diversity, save rare species and protects us from a corporate monopoly on the very sustenance of life!

The other half of our fund raising efforts will go to organizations in the third world that are fighting seed piracy. In India, peasants have saved rice seed for centuries. They are more than four-thousand varieties that have characteristics best suited for particular conditions. This diversity has protected the species. If a disease or pest attacks one type, another may resist it. In India and other countries, giant chemical companies are introducing Genetically-Modified Seed that is contaminating indigenous seed stocks. Once these patented genes are detected in local seed supplies farmers are no longer permitted to save part of their harvest to replant the following season. They are obliged to purchase seed from the multi- national at an inflated price. In addition, these same companies have been buying up small seed houses at an alarming rate. These farmers need our help!
